Abstract

Background: Low back pain, specifically, chronic low back pain, is thus far very common issue that interferes with the activities of daily living of the affected individuals. Surgery to the lumbar discs is among the frequent interventions undertaken by patients diagnosed with CLBP due to disc herniation or DDD with the intention of offering pain relief and physical function.

Objectives: This paper assesses the efficacy of lumbar disc surgery in the treatment of CLBP based on current published.

Study Design: A Retrospective Design Study.

Duration and Place of the Study: The study was carried out at department of neurosurgery mmc mardan Literature review of the current study included scientific articles retrieved from databases from January 2013 to the end of December 2022.

Material and Methods: A search strategy in all electronic library databases; PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar was implemented. The list of Web of Science indexing terms used in the search was; lumbar disc surgery, chronic low back pain, discectomy, micro discectomy, spinal fusion, clinical outcomes, pain relief and functional improvement. In order to increase the sensitivity and relevance of the findings, the search aimed to include all categories of studies published in indexed journals, including RCTs, cohort

Results: The publication search and review led to the identification of 2,347 articles. Out of the overall 376 articles identified in the search, 38 articles had their titles and abstracts reviewed for inclusion readiness. Out of the identified 76 studies, 35 studies were selected following the study inclusion criteria that were used in the study. From the included studies, 18 trail cross-sectioned randomized controlled trial, 10 cohort trial and 7 systematic review studies. 31 of the included studies had less than 100 patients, while other included 17 studies with more than 200 patients and 10 studies included more than 500 patients, These studies involved patients ranging from as low as 50 to as high as 1200.

Conclusion: Lumbar disc surgery, including discectomy and micro-discectomy, has shown to be effective to alleviate CLBP, improve the level of pain and provide functional restoration with positive short-term results.
