Plagiarism Policy (Similarity Index)

The Journal of Bacha Khan Medical College (JBKMC) strictly adheres to the plagiarism and similarity index guidelines prescribed by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).

In accordance with HEC policy, JBKMC permits a maximum similarity index of 19% for all submitted manuscripts. Submissions exceeding this threshold will be rejected unless appropriately revised. Exceptions may be considered only for manuscripts derived directly from the author’s academic theses (e.g., BS, M.Phil., or Ph.D.), provided the total similarity remains below the 19% limit.

JBKMC uses Turnitin, an advanced plagiarism detection tool, to screen all submissions prior to initiating the peer review process. Turnitin generates a Similarity Report that highlights text overlap between the manuscript and previously published literature.

It is important to note the following:

  • A high similarity percentage is not automatically an indicator of plagiarism but may warrant further scrutiny.

  • The source and context of the overlapping material must be evaluated carefully.

  • Authors are encouraged to properly paraphrase and cite all reused content.

  • Overlapping material from the methodology or reference sections may be acceptable if appropriately cited.

The editorial team will review the similarity report and, depending on the nature and extent of duplication, may:

  • Request revisions and proper citation of uncited sources

  • Return the manuscript for rewriting

  • Reject the manuscript outright in cases of suspected academic misconduct

JBKMC remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity. Any instance of plagiarism, text recycling, or unauthorized reproduction will be handled in accordance with COPE and HEC protocols, which may include blacklisting the author(s), informing affiliated institutions, or retracting published content.
