Background : Hypospadias is considered to be one of the frequently occurring congenital abnormalities of the penis concerning the location of the urethral orifice. These may include early surgical correction in an attempt at improving urinary tract function as well as future sexual potential. Although many research have been done on the topics, the issue pertaining to the impact of early hypospadias surgery on all of those considered outcomes in the long term is still in question.
Objectives : To compare the results of urinary and sexual functions in patients who underwent a primary hypospadias surgery when they were less than 18 months of age and those who undergone surgery at a later age.
Study design : A Retrospective cohort study
Place and duration of study.department of paediatric surgery mmc mardan from jan 2022 to july 2022
Methods: one hundred and fifty male patients, who underwent hypospadias surgery at the ages between 6 and 18 months were reviewed. These included evaluation of the urinary and sexual functions as well as the cosmetic appearance during the adolescent and adult period after the surgery.
Results : The mean age of the 150 patients was 7. 5 months with standard deviation of 2. 3 months. Patients’ urinary function after treatment was assessed as normal in 92 percent of patients, and 8 percent had minor complications, including tensile urethral stricture in patients (p = 0. 03). During adolescence sexual function was normal in 90% of patients. While comparing urinary outcomes of young and older patients the p-value was 0. 02, therefore early surgery was beneficial for the results.
Conclusion : Hypospadias surgery where the procedure is done early results in good long-term urinary and sexual health with few complications. The experiences and findings presented points to the need for early intervention in order to achieve better results in the years that a child grows up and as an adult.
